Title:
Dissipation in quantum hybrid and classical spin systems

Abstract:
The dissipation resulting from the coupling of a system with its environment is commonly viewed as a foe for quantum technologies. Nonetheless, recent developments at light-matter platforms have shown that correlated dissipation can be leveraged to achieve new dynamical states of matter and quantum applications. As bosonic excitations, magnons share many similarities with photons and can also couple efficiently to single long-lived atomic spins, e.g., nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers. In the first part of this talk, I will discuss the emergence of cooperative quantum behavior in quantum hybrid spin systems comprised of NV centers coupled via a magnetic bath, with an emphasis on how crucial differences between the photonic and magnonic physical properties make them complementary in terms of quantum platforms and parameter regimes. The second part of this talk will focus on dissipative classical spin systems that are conventionally described via a non-Hermitian approach. Specifically, I will show how our recent work has allowed us to identify the key ingredients underlying the non-Hermitian skin effect in magnetic systems.
